Curieux! media highlights our research into air pollution and eye health
RetourThe online medium Curieux! has published an article on the results of a study conducted by the LEHA team at the BPH on the effects of air pollution on eye health.
Cécile Delcourt, research director and scientific leader of the LEHA team and of the project, explains in this article that a number of recent international studies agree in showing an increased risk of eye disease, particularly glaucoma, in people who are most exposed to air pollution and fine particles.
And the main results of her work on the Alienor cohort from Bordeaux also show that air pollution, mainly from road traffic and industrial sources, can penetrate the bloodstream and reach the retina, accelerating the loss of retinal nerve fibres. This phenomenon is characteristic of glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide.
Curieux ! stresses the importance of these discoveries, as they highlight a direct link between the quality of the air we breathe and our long-term visual health. The article, which highlights the unsuspected consequences of air pollution, is intended to raise public awareness of this public health issue.
The ALIENOR cohort (Antioxidants, Essential Lipids, Nutrition and Ocular Diseases) studying almost 1,000 residents of the Bordeaux metropolitan area Alienor has already produced a number of important results on the eye health of an elderly population, in particular on UV exposure and eye health and on screening for eye diseases, in particular glaucoma.
The objectives are :
- study the associations between age-related eye diseases (AMD, glaucoma, cataract, dry eye) and nutritional factors.
- determine the incidence of different age-related eye diseases and their links with nutritional, demographic or environmental factors in a representative population in the Bordeaux region
- examine the relationship between antioxidants, lipids and other factors with age-related eye diseases
- assess the ocular health of an elderly population through comprehensive ophthalmological examinations, including intraocular pressure measurements, optic nerve examinations, and assessments of the biomechanical properties of the cornea
- study the vascular risk factors for eye disease.
The aim of this research in the general elderly population is to provide important epidemiological data for the prevention and treatment of age-related eye diseases.
Alienor is an extension of the 3 Cities study involving 9294 participants aged 65 or over recruited in 3 cities Bordeaux / Dijon / Montpellier (hence the name Trois Cités, 3C) who were followed for over 10 years to determine the link between vascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease.
